The Chimney Safety Institute of America
The Chimney Safety Institute of America, Inc. (CSIA) is a non-profit, tax-exempt educational institution dedicated to chimney safety through public education and the development of technical knowledge, educational programs, and professionalism among American chimney sweeps and chimney service companies.
Founded in 1983 and supported by the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG), a non-profit association of chimney service companies, the Chimney Safety Institute of America is an active leader in the nationwide effort to eliminate the loss of life and property caused by chimney fires, carbon monoxide poising, and other chimney safety hazards. Such problems most often result from un-maintained, dirty, blocked, deteriorated or improperly installed chimneys, heater and furnace venting systems, and solid fuel appliances.
A major CSIA goal is the development of a strong and positive public awareness of the CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep program and CSIA Certified Chimney Sweeps as men and women who have mastered the material in the certification manual and in the National Fire Protection Association Standard (NFPA 211: Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel Burning Appliances). As chimney service specialists who have demonstrated their knowledge of this material by passing a rigorous examination, they have earned the highest and most honored credential available within the chimney service trade.
The Certified Chimney Sweep Program
The CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep program was developed by the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG) in 1979, and administered by that organization until 1991, when the Guild reorganized and placed its public and chimney service education functions in the hands of the Chimney Safety Institute of America, a non-profit, tax exempt educational foundation. The CSIA program is the only national testing program for chimney service professionals that are recognized by government agencies, licensing boards, insurance companies, and the public at large. CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep status enjoys growing prestige among many organizations in the solid fuel, residential heating, and fire prevention fields, including, Hearth Products Association (HPA), the American Gas Association (AGA) and many federal, state, county, and municipal agencies and governments.
Candidates for the CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep credential make a firm commitment to study for a rigorous test of the codes, clearances, standards, and practices involved in basic chimney sweeping and their knowledge of chimney and venting systems associated with all types of residential heating systems. The knowledge they gain increases their competence to clean and examine these systems for safety hazards. Every chimney sweep and chimney service specialist is encouraged to demonstrate his or her commitment to chimney safety by becoming a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep.
